FOUND in Ann Arbor
FOUND opened in May of 2005 with the assistance of wonderful helpers and believers. I (Mary, the owner, that is) am the main "finder", traveling to auctions and antique shows to purchase vintage merchandise. In the shop, we have antique display pieces that hold an untold number of tiny vintage treasures and ephemera for artistic souls. Vintage sheet music, rick-rack and buttons, little chairs, litho-tin toys, banks, doorknobs, children's prints, books and do-dads of all sorts go in and out of the shop on a regular basis. Most of these little things won't be found on the website as they don't usually last long in the shop.
Artisans working with a variety of recycled materials add whimsey to the mix. Where else could you find angels crafted from old silverware? Little robots made from abandoned electronics tubes line a shelf. Jewelry artists keep us stocked with great pieces created from old buttons, typewriter keys, snipets of paper, license plates and game parts. A local folk artist does fabulous paintings on salvaged wood. We have several others creating assemblage and mixed media pieces from found objects. Wonderful glazes on antique tin ceiling tiles resemble art pottery glazes. While the majority of our artists are local, we also feature nationally recognized artisans at FOUND.
Rounding out our inventory are fun candles, accessories and holiday decor. We seek out lines that are different than what everyone else is carrying and things that fit in well with our vintage merchandise. We've become known as the place in Ann Arbor for candles in a crayon-box assortment of colors!
With displays that are always changing, unique merchandise and personal service, we strive to make shopping at FOUND an interesting and fun experience!

Mary's inspiration for FOUND...
The idea probably started with a cabin on a small lake where my extended family would gather when I was young. Wonderful antique wicker furniture mingled with mismatched painted chairs. Wildflowers overflowed in jars and pitchers turned vases. The dishes didn't match, but the food was great. Tables in the yard were made from huge wooden spools cast off from the power company. Glorious summer days were spent jumping off the homemade raft into discarded tractor-tire inner tubes. As the years went by, a horse was made from old logs for the kids to play on. Other wood peices turned into animal sculptures overnight. A manequin named Josephine joined the family. To this day she still wears her 1950's bathing suit in the summertime!
You never knew what you would find when you went to that cabin! It was a mix of old and new, fresh and worn, with pots overflowing with geraniums and petunias. Bright, colorful and always fun. Odd elements that could have produced a hodge-podge of "stuff" flowed together beautifully. Likewise with the shop I've created. In a sense, FOUND is a tribute to those days and to my parents. Dad could always make something from cast-offs and Mom pulled it all together to be fun and welcoming. People came and enjoyed!
